A Bajan Home Stay is an Awesome Way to... Stay

Something to know if you are thinking about staying with a Barbadian family is that Bajans are friendly, love to have a good time and are always ‘looking out’.

So if you were to choose, say, an option like ‘a Bajan Home stay’, then you have very little to be concerned about.

The only thing is, this option is not suited for the entire family. This accommodation is usually a room in someone’s house or an apartment attached to a home, fit for a single person or couple.

Truly affordable accommodation to consider, rates are reasonable for the space. An exciting twist to your holiday, staying in a Barbadian home is a less conservative type of accommodation.

It will certainly put you in touch with Bajan living (life and style), food, dress, social scenes, dialect and all.

No doubt, with the personalities of most Barbadians, you’ll feel like part of the family.

That's how I felt when I stayed at Mr. and Mrs. Smith. You can read my Bajan home stay story below.

My Home Stay Story

Mr. and Mrs. Smith- does the movie come to mind? It came to mine. My stay at this Bajan family’s home apartment was comfortable and somewhat stress free.

They are a lovely couple, a family of four. The apartment is tastefully furnished, it has a romantic feel and with this hot climate, it is a must to mention that it is air conditioned.

Almost a studio, the use of space in this apartment is very good, a dividing wall, aesthetically laid out gives character and a spacious feeling. The lawn is kept well manicured and there was not a single ‘crawly’ in sight.

After Mr. and Mrs. gave me a tour of the apartment, I knew it was where I wanted to stay. If you are single or a couple it would have been perfect for you.

Staying at the Smith’s was usually quiet, the setting- a beautiful suburban neighborhood, you would have forgotten there was anyone else around.

Anytime I was going and coming and the Smith’s were outside, there was always a short, pleasant exchange and they never forgot to ask if everything was alright.

Nothing in the world will bother you there. The apartment is well structured, the windows are small and have screens to keep the pests and bugs at bay and the only way in for those things is literally through the door.

I happen not to like when ‘crawlies’ my least favourite the white lizard get into the house, one night I came in and found one in the apartment, since it is a small space there was no room for the two of us.

I looked in the cupboard and the one thing I didn’t have was spray,(I don’t even know if spray works on these things?) the apartment is so well secure it would have been a hard time helping this thing to find its way out. (As this story builds… does the movie start coming to mind?)

I knocked on the Smith’s door to get some spray- Mrs. Smith was so brave, she wrangle it and got it out back in the garden where it belonged. Mr. Smith was asleep and slept through the midst of my slight commotion. Those things wriggle a lot. I’m not good with the creepy crawlies, did I mention that before?

I thanked Mrs. Smith profusely and her words were “not to worry, once you’re comfortable that’s alright”, my hero! After that everything was fine.

This might have seemed extreme or minor, hardly life threatening but the Smith’s are very kind and helpful, and they saved my night. Now does the movie come back to mind? Okay, guess not.

But will you consider a Bajan home stay?
