In Barbados ... It Was Mysterious Art.
This Barbados artist with a gift to inspire and awe, now calls it Mysterious Art.
Finding this artist’s collection of fine art in Barbados is one thing.
Having his work displayed in your personal space is one of the best feelings and its private stories that adore life in Barbados is one sure ‘smiling’ way to stay in touch.
On my visit to the annual BMEX show, in the month of May, at the Sherbourne Conference Centre, I came across an artist with an exciting display of fine Barbados art.
His ‘booth’ costantly had a crowd of people, who weren't going anywhere fast.
I made my way over, to see what was going on and it was no surprise why no one was in any hurry to leave.
Who is this artist?
That was the question on the tip of tongues viewing his art for the first time.
It's Kovsky Cox!
With thin, medium locks and a flawless sense of humour, this easy going spirit takes his ardour out on the palate.
This Barbadian artist works with oil and acrylic colour in creating prints and original portraits.
He mostly paints traditional scenes of Barbadian life and Barbados history.
These make up a large part of his public collection, for sale.
Each piece tells a different story and is always exciting to look at and be around.
His favourite subjects to paint are people and beach scenes- ‘I love painting at the beach.
I also enjoy painting mysterious pieces of my thoughts and emotions, but I enjoy painting regardless of the subject.
It is the client's desire- I just put all of my passion for art into their vision, to create a work of art.
It doesn’t have to be traditional Barbados art it can be the Alps, in fact, it can be anywhere in the world. Life is art!'
Bursting with personality his pieces attract the most avid art collectors.
Kovsky’s work ganers the attention of some of Barbados’ finer and older artists - Fielding Babb, Victor Collector and Trevor Bennett. “ These gentlemen are my icons ”.
He remembers, the very first year he entered his work for NIFCA, a prestigious, local, cultural competition, showcasing the best of the arts.
He won a gold award for a mysterious piece which he painted for his personal fulfillment. To exhibit his pieces in various galleries in London.
There is more to this artist. Kovsky frames his work in style.
And is keen to frame any piece you may have sitting around without one.
If you already have frames for your pieces, he’ll take care of the technical work.
If you don’t have frames in hand or a type of frame in mind, no problem!
Choose your colour and framing material or this artist can customize a frame that will make your pice shine!
It all started innocently for Kovsky, as a young boy, he would draw all sorts of things.
Most of his drawings in his tender years were abstract and named by his youthful imagination.
“Drawing was so much fun for me as a child- it was something I got up to, along with all the other ‘boyish’ things I used to do”, Kovsky tells us.
While smirking uncontrollably, being noticeably vague and mischievously withdrawn, I wonder what ‘boyish’ things these would have been. Hmmm… Kovsky? As time went on, Kovsky continued to draw and started to paint as a hobby. Without any formal training or artistic influences in his family , his skill was self taught and his art was his private appreciation. He created a piece whenever he had a chance. It wasn’t long before Kovsky’s artistic ability was spotted publicly. “I started working as a maintenance guy at Quayside Centre, on the south coast, opposite Accra hotel. In my spare time, I escaped by sketching, people would pass by and admire what I was doing and some even asked me to sketch portraits for them and I did”. A few months later in 2004, Kovsky Cox started his business, Mysterious Art. The name Mysterious Art is a reflection of this artist who sees himself as a mysterious person, “it was one of my private, mysterious pieces that won my first major award in art in Barbados.
The pieces I create for myself are mysterious.”
They are a part of me and no one really sees these mysterious paintings.
I may, on a very rare occasion feature one, with my display of my public collection, but it wouldn't be for sale, it's very hard to part with.
