Wood ArtZ! .... Barbados

A joiners talent meets his dream and together produced Wood Artz.

barbados wood art Bob Marley Clock With wood works in his blood, Mario Smith found himself in a lucrative career which he enjoyed so much, he never gave a second thought of how it came to be.

When we asked how that was possible, he replied, “It just happened and it didn’t feel like work.” Fortunate for Mario, as many of us dream to feel like that while very few of us can agree with him.

Mario recalled much of the careers in his family were along the lines of working with wood, carpentry included.

He never saw it as something that was subconsciously passed on, he believes he gravitated to wood because he takes pleasure in working with his hands and working with wood gave him the most gratification.

When Mario Smith began his profession, he started out as a joiner, and somehow, after years of elated clients, pioneered by a job well done, joining was no longer enough.

This Barbados artist wanted to expand his focus; he knew he would still definitely work with wood but also wanted room to be more creative with the medium.

Barbados Ornaments- Wood Art One day, while reading Wood Magazine, Mario saw something that captured what his soul was seeking.

He describes it as the perfect alternative to his “Wood Artz” and at the time for him it was simply captivating copper art, he knew that he would be able to perfect the same beauty he saw that day with wood and so his business Wood Artz was born.

Ever since that revolutionary moment, Mario Smith has been practicing Wood Art, producing works with fascinating detail, using various techniques, including scrowl saw , marquetry a much more advanced technique where he uses different types of wood and the woods natural colours to bring out the picture, and pyrography, which is also known as wood-burning.

Barbados Art Although Mario favours all of his pieces, the most mysterious and alluring one in his portfolio right now is the “Flaming Face”, with characteristics of a woman, Mario admits that most people can’t figure out why this piece is so captivating and neither can he.

It has been 3 years since Mario started his business and there have been no regrets.

In fact, Mario does not plan to leave his past behind as he sees the business going beyond wall hangings and ornaments, where he will merge his eye for design and skill of detail with his joiners talent to make attention-grabbing furniture for homes and businesses.
